Piano at three, in church. Her first song at twelve. Brazil calls her an artivist.

Soul, blues, reggae, funk, R&B and rap, in dialogue with Afro-diasporic traditions.

She also has a wonderful voice, as powerful as a hurricane, and she is extremely outspoken, with humour and charm.

The story

Bia Ferreira is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and artivist — one of the most powerful voices in contemporary Latin American music. Her art spans music, activism and politics, confronting structural racism, LGBTphobia and black feminism, and holding love and community affections in the same breath.

She started on the piano at three, in church, and later at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music; guitar, double bass, cavaquinho, atabaque and drums followed. At twelve she wrote her first composition — a defining moment in her relationship with identity, gender and religion.

Her lyrics are anchored in what critics call escrevivência — writing-living, autobiography and social criticism together — a concept linked to the writer Conceição Evaristo. Her concerts are platforms for dialogue on human rights, racial equality, sexuality and gender.
